Microsoft has released updated tools and binaries for Windows Internet
Explorer and while it is not worth those of you who already have the
software installed it does come with a few interesting changes.
- The menu bar is now visible by default.
- The Internet Explorer 7 online tour has updated how-to’s. Also, the “first-run” experience includes a new overview.
- We’ve included a new MSI installer that simplifies deployment for IT administrators in enterprises. Learn more about it here.
The two first points are fairly interesting but I guess people were
getting a little freaked out at waking up one morning and finding their
toolbar missing, I know I would. But does anyone else get the situation
where you open Internet Explorer find it loads with the default view
all toolbars show descriptions, the toolbar loads) and then it reverts
to your custom settings? It does that on my work machine and it looks
very poor.
The deployment is now a lot easier, although after completing
customisation the package says it was created by an UNKNOWN PUBLISHER.
Apparently a known bug, but again looks very poor.
One change not mentioned is that WGA validation has been removed from
the installation, which is great for deployment and certainly the right
choice as although Microsoft obviously has the right to protect their
products, they can't risk creating zombies out of unpatched machines as
it will start to affect legitimate users.
